The Voigtlander Bessa-R3M Rangefinder Camera is a modified version of the Bessa R3A camera. While being identical in all other aspects to the R3A model, the R3M features a mechanical shutter release. This makes it possible to use the camera even without batteries, albeit without metering.

The Voigtlander Bessa R3A/M is an improved version of the Bessa R2 rangefinder camera, which in itself is an advancement over the original Bessa R camera. All of the original Bessa R’s outstanding features are retained; an exceptionally bright viewfinder, quiet shutter & simple LED metering system.

In addition, the Bessa R3A/M series is the first M mount camera ever to feature a 1:1 viewfinder. As a result, shooting with both eyes open is now possible. Also, when bundled with a 50mm lens, the frame lines will show a bigger area in the viewfinder.

  • TTL Centerweighted light metering
  • Clear LED Exposure scale with red for under/overexposure and green for correct exposure
  • Vertical-travel mechanical metal focal plane shutter
  • Exceptionally bright viewfinder with split image rangefinder patch & brightlines for 40/90, 50, 75mm lenses
  • Superior rubberized and anodized body covering materials
  • Bayonet Leica M-type lens mount accepts all 39mm screw mount lenses (with the appropriate adapter) from Canon, Leica & Voigtlander, as well as M bayonet-type lenses from Leica, Minolta & Konica
  • Compatibility with the Voigtlander Trigger Winder (originally introduced with the Bessa T) for speedy, battery-free film advance
  • Compatibility with dioptric correction lenses from the Nikon FM3A

1 review for Voigtlander Bessa-R3M (1:1 Viewfinder) 35mm Rangefinder – Black

Very solidly built -like a tank. Excellent build quality. Quiet shutter (doesn’t have the mirror slap that SLR cameras do). Metering system tells you how many stops you are over/under exposed for faster manual setting of aperture/shutter speeds. Has an additional lock-out lever to keep you from accidentally opening the film door. I’ve never required this, but it is a nice touch. The 1:1 viewfinder is great as you can keep both eyes fully open when focusing/composing-this is a surprisingly useful feature and makes this camera stand out above the r2m and r4m. The R3M has internal framelines for a 75mm lens, which is absolutely fantastic for portraits. It also has framelines for a 40mm standard lens- and voigtlanders 40mm lens is an absolutely fantastic lens (very fast aperture, 10 blades for smooth bokeh, and a really nice alternative to a 50mm.) This is a very nice film camera and one of the last reasonably priced ones that can be purchased new (while supplies last as they are now discontinued). The only negative things about this camera are 1) sometimes the exposure LEDs can be a little tricky to see in very bright light and 2) the diopter eyepiece can unscrew (as it is meant to do), which means it can accidentally work itself loose and become lost. This can happen to any camera though that allows you to swap out eyepieces to match your own eyes glass/contact prescription so it’s not a problem peculiar to this camera only. Highly recommended.
